Meerut: A 14-year-old Class 10 student allegedly took her own life by consuming pesticide at her home in Saharanpur after returning from tuition, reportedly following repeated harassment by a fellow student, police said on Monday. Both the victim and the accused, a 15-year-old boy, were enrolled at the same tuition centre.
Saharanpur SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan told TOI, “An FIR has been registered against the boy for abetment to suicide. Locals informed us that both teenagers were in Class 10 and attended the same tuition. The incident occurred on Sunday, shortly after a relative of the victim reportedly saw them together while returning from tuition. This may have triggered her actions,” he stated, adding that the police are seriously investigating the family’s claims.
According to the girl’s mother, the boy had misbehaved with and physically assaulted her daughter during their commute from the tuition centre. The girl allegedly shared details of the harassment with her mother, revealing that similar incidents had happened multiple times before.
Soon after recounting the experience, the teenager locked herself in a room and consumed pesticide, commonly used for crops. Upon noticing her absence, family members broke into the room and found her unconscious. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead.
SSP Sajwan said a postmortem was conducted, but the exact cause of death couldn’t be established. “The viscera has been sent for further forensic analysis. The body has been handed over to the family for last rites. We will proceed with appropriate action once the forensic results are available,” he added.
