Meerut: A teenage couple in Budaun district ended their lives in separate incidents after facing opposition from their families regarding their relationship. The 19-year-olds, who were cousins and neighbors in Bhagta Nagla village, reportedly wanted to marry but were not allowed to do so.
Civil Lines SHO Manoj Kumar Singh told TOI that the boy, a Class 12 graduate, spoke to the girl over the phone on Friday night about their families’ resistance. Distressed, he left home on his motorcycle without informing anyone and was later found hanging from a tree near the ARTO office on Bilsi Road. His body was recovered Saturday morning, identified, and handed over to the family after a postmortem.
Following the news of his death, the girl consumed poison and died on Saturday. Her family conducted her last rites privately without notifying authorities.
Jarifnagar SHO Avnish Kumar revealed that it was later discovered the girl was pregnant. However, since no post-mortem was conducted due to the family’s secrecy, this could not be officially confirmed.
