Tear Gas Fired as Farmers Push Towards Delhi for MSP Law
In a dramatic standoff, police deployed tear gas canisters on Tuesday to disperse protesting farmers as they advanced towards Delhi, demanding the enactment of a law on minimum support price (MSP) for crops. The agitation, spearheaded by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, intensifies pressure on the BJP-led Centre to address farmers’ grievances. Despite the Centre’s steadfast stance against guaranteeing MSP, another round of dialogue is scheduled for today in attempts to resolve the impasse.
The confrontation escalated as farmers from Punjab faced tear gas shells, including some dropped by drones, at two border points between Haryana and Punjab. Authorities had installed barricades to prevent the protesters from proceeding towards Delhi. Late into the night, the farmers remained halted at the Punjab-Haryana border, facing resistance from Haryana police.
The clashes and ensuing roadblocks caused significant traffic disruptions in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday. Commuters experienced sluggish movement as barricades were erected both at the borders and in various parts of Delhi, amplifying the logistical challenges and public inconvenience stemming from the ongoing protests.
