Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday defended the Maha Kumbh against criticism, stating that over 56.25 crore devotees had already taken a holy dip in Prayagraj. Dismissing allegations and “fake videos” targeting the event, he called such attempts an attack on the faith of millions. He reiterated that the Maha Kumbh is not associated with any political party or organization but belongs to society and has gained global recognition despite misinformation campaigns.
His response came after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while addressing the Bengal Assembly on Tuesday, referred to the Maha Kumbh as “Mrityu Kumbh.” She cited the January 29 stampede that claimed 30 lives, criticising the lack of planning and questioning the number of people rescued.
Speaking in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Adityanath countered Banerjee’s remarks, stating, “As we participate in this discussion, more than 56.25 crore devotees have already taken their holy dip in Prayagraj. Spreading falsehoods against Sanatan Dharma, Maa Ganga, India, or the Maha Kumbh is like playing with the faith of these 56 crore people. This event is not organised by any particular party or group but belongs to society, with the government serving only as a facilitator.”
He further emphasised that it was an honor for his government to be associated with the Maha Kumbh, which had attained international recognition despite attempts to discredit it. Expressing condolences for the victims of the January 29 stampede and related road accidents, he assured that the government stood with the affected families and would provide necessary assistance.
