Taiwan, a territory claimed by China, continues to face persistent threats from Beijing. Taiwan has reported that nearly 41 Chinese aircraft were detected near the island within a 24-hour period.
This move from China comes after Beijing mentioned potential consequences for those who support Taiwan’s independence and recognise it as a separate nation.
China remains firm in its determination to unify Taiwan with the mainland, even if it requires the use of force.
China has intensified its pressure on Taiwan over the past two years and has increased military exercises around the island since the inauguration of its new president, Lai Ching-te, last month.
Taiwan’s defense ministry stated it detected 41 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels operating around Taiwan in the 24-hour period leading up to 6:00 am (2200 GMT).
The ministry also noted that “32 of the aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait,” which divides the 180-kilometer (110-mile) waterway separating Taiwan from China.
The defense ministry responded promptly to the situation, the Taiwanese ministry stated.
On May 25, Taiwan detected 62 Chinese military aircraft around the island in a 24-hour period, the highest number in a single day.
China regards Lai Ching-te as a dangerous separatist and will continue to exert pressure on the island until it reunifies with mainland China.
Under China’s new rules, individuals deemed diehard supporters of Taiwanese independence could face the death penalty.
