Taiwan Bolsters Capital Defences with Marine Corps Deployment
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has deployed the Marine Corps to the Greater Taipei Area, focusing on strategic sites such as the Tamsui River and Taipei Port, in response to growing security concerns. The move underscores a shift in military priorities to counter potential threats from China, with an emphasis on rapid deployment capabilities and joint defense operations.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence has directed the Marine Corps to strengthen troop deployments in the greater Taipei area, aiming to address potential security threats from China. According to a military source cited by the Taipei Times, the initiative targets critical locations such as the capital city and nearby infrastructure.
The Marine Amphibious Reconnaissance and Patrol Unit has been tasked with working alongside the Guandu Area Command and the Coast Guard Administration to enhance river defence operations, particularly focusing on the Tamsui River and the Port of Taipei.
This decision builds on earlier actions, such as the deployment of the 66th Marine Brigade at the Political Warfare Academy in Taipei’s Beitou District in 2017. That marked the first time a combat unit, other than the military police, was stationed in the capital.
The latest deployment reflects updated security assessments of Taipei’s vulnerabilities. The reconnaissance unit will collaborate with other military branches to bolster the defence of strategic sites, ensuring greater protection for critical infrastructure like the Port of Taipei.
Traditionally, Taiwan’s security has been overseen by the military police. However, evolving threats have necessitated stronger and more comprehensive defences. This development may result in a coordinated defence strategy involving both the Marine Corps and the military police, according to the Taipei Times.
Looking ahead, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence plans to restructure naval forces next year. This includes integrating anti-ship missiles, fast attack boats, and reconnaissance units into the Coastal Defence Operations Command. The Marine Corps is also expected to transition from relying on heavy equipment to focusing on rapid deployment capabilities, with detailed plans anticipated later this year.
These changes highlight Taiwan’s commitment to adapting its military strategy to address regional tensions and safeguard its capital and key infrastructure against potential threats.
