Berlin granted citizenship to a record number of citizens last year, including a large number of Syrians who have been fleeing their country in the last decade and have been granted citizenship, according to the statistics of The Federal Statistics Office.

The office stated, “The high number of naturalisations of Syrians is linked to the high influx of Syrian asylum seekers who came between 2014 and 2016 and are increasingly meeting the naturalisation requirements such as language skills and minimum residence time.”

Around 200,100 foreigners in Germany were naturalised last year, a 19% rise reported since the previous year and the highest level since records started in the year 2000.

Around 38% of these foreigners belong to Syria, with Turkish and Iraqi citizens making up the next largest group.

These newly naturalised citizens had an average age of 29.3 years old compared to an average of 44.6 years old in the overall native population of the country. Many economists argue that this will prove helpful for Germany as it will help Berlin tackle the problem of an aging population, which is a ticking time bomb for Europe’s biggest economy.
