On Tuesday, according to a Swedish think-tank research, China’s nuclear arsenal grew from 410 warheads in January 2023 to 500 in January 2024, while India still possesses more nuclear weapons than Pakistan.

Nine nuclear-armed countries, including China, India, and Pakistan, have continued to develop their nuclear arsenals despite the world having seen two wars in the last two years, according to research by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

The United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, North Korea, and Israel are the other countries listed in the report presented by SIPRI. According to the estimate, 90% of all nuclear weapons are possessed by the US and Russia. Also, in 2023, several nations installed new weapon systems capable of carrying nuclear bombs.

On ballistic missiles, some 2,100 nuclear warheads—mostly from the US and Russia—were maintained in a state of high operational alert. According to the research, China probably did not put all of its warheads on high operational alert for the first time.

The Nuclear Warhead Count of India:

According to the assessment presented by SIPRI, India has two more “stored” nuclear warheads than Pakistan as of January 2024, with 172 total. According to the research, India increased its nuclear arsenal slightly in 2023.

In the year 2023, both nations kept working on creating new nuclear delivery methods. The report stated India seems to be placing increasing emphasis on longer-range weapons, including those capable of reaching targets throughout China, even though Pakistan remains the primary focus of India’s nuclear deterrent.

The Swedish think tank added that North Korea, India, and Pakistan were putting several warheads on ballistic missiles, just like the US and Russia had done.

China, according to Hans Kristensen of SIPRI, is building up its nuclear arsenal at a rate that surpasses that of any other nation.
