A suspected suicide bombing has killed nearly 18 people and injured about 30 innocents in devastating bombings in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria.

The onslaught on Saturday, June 29, targeted a wedding ceremony, a hospital, and a funeral. The attack killed nearly 18 people and injured more than 42 in a catastrophic blast.

According to the head of the local state emergency management agency, these series of attacks were carried out by one of the suspected female suicide bombers in Nigeria. AFP reports claim that during the three blasts on Saturday in the town of Gwoza, a woman with a baby strapped to her back detonated explosives in the middle of a wedding ceremony.

The wedding ceremony was taking place at around 3:45 PM (local time) when a woman seen “carrying a baby on her back detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) she had on her at a crowded motor park,” said Borno State police spokesman Nahum Kenneth Daso.

The other female suicide bombers targeted a hospital in the same town and carried out another attack at the funeral for victims of the wedding blast, reported AFP citing local authorities.

Barkindo Saidu, director general of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, said that the people killed in the attack included a pregnant woman, children, and adults. “The degree of injuries ranges from abdominal ruptures, skull fractures, and limb fractures,” said Saidu, as quoted by Reuters. He also mentioned that 19 of the seriously injured were taken to the regional capital Maiduguri, while 23 others were awaiting evacuation.

Nigeria, an African nation, shares a border with Cameroon. The violence in the country has been ongoing for more than a decade, with Boko Haram, a terrorist group, being a significant challenge for the Nigerian government. Boko Haram seized Gwoza in 2014, but it was reclaimed by the Nigerian military with help from Chadian forces the year after.

Boko Haram, along with other Islamist militant groups, has killed more than 40,000 innocents, and the violence is on the verge of escalating. The violence has left millions of people displaced within the nation.
