Shreegauri Sawant: A Transgender Icon
Born in Pune and hailing from Mumbai, Shreegauri Sawant’s journey as a transgender activist began when she fled her home as a teenager upon discovering her identity, in order to prevent her father, a police officer, from shame.
Notably, Shreegauri Sawant played a pivotal role as one of the applicants in the historic NALSA case of 2013, which culminated in the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in 2014, officially recognising transgender individuals as a distinct third gender.
The Series: ‘Taali’
Directed by National Award-winning director Ravi Jadhav, created by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar, written by Kshitji Patwardhan, and produced by Arjun Singgh Baran, Kartk D Nishandar, and Afeefa Nadiadwala, the official release is set for August 15, on the occasion of Independence Day, on JioCinema.
‘Taali’ is set to be a series that highlights the transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant’s quest for the recognition of the third gender in India. The series will also shed light on the hardships Shreegauri Sawant had to endure at that time for the benefit of the transgender community.
In the teaser, Sushmita Sen is shown wearing a sari and adjusting her bindi at the beginning of the trailer as she gazes into the mirror. Subsequently, a scene featuring members of the transgender community greeting and touching her feet is shown, acknowledging the fact that she is playing the role of Shreegauri Sawant, the transgender activist.
Viewers on social media praised the trailer and Sushmita’s acting. A viewer commented, “Sushmita Sen excels in this teaser,” while another viewer stated, “I can’t wait anymore.” “This movie appears to be an actual masterpiece,” said another.
However, in a recent interview with News18, Sushmita Sen stated, “The first poster of Taali that I had released had my half face covered with me in a clapping motion and I still remember checking through the comment section there were many nameless people who were trolling me by commenting ‘Chhakka’ repeatedly. I had only one thought how can they do something like this to me? Since it occurred in my time frame I viewed it seriously. So obviously, I blocked them all. However, afterward, it occurred to me that even though this’s what it makes me think that while I’m merely depicting Shreegauri Sawant’s life, they’ve been dealing with it each living second throughout their lives.”
Sushmita Sen also mentioned that she believes her depiction of Shreegauri Sawant would cause a shift in people’s perceptions.
