Supreme Court’s Landmark Verdict: Life Imprisonment for Bihar Politician Prabhunath Singh in 1995 Double Murder Case
In a rare and significant judicial decision, the Supreme Court of India sentenced Prabhunath Singh, a well-known politician from Bihar, to life in prison in connection with a horrific double murder case that occurred in 1995. A week after the trial court and the Patna High Court both ruled Prabhunath Singh not guilty, the Supreme Court reversed those decisions and rendered its critical verdict.
The Supreme Court’s decision not only ushers in a new era of justice for the victims and their families, but it also establishes a standard for the prosecution of prominent figures in crimes, particularly those involving violence and homicide. The Supreme Court has given the state government and the convicted person instructions as part of its overall ruling. They must pay each family of the two people who died INR 10 lakhs in compensation, plus an extra INR 5 lakhs for the one who was hurt. This compensation ruling demonstrates the court’s dedication to enforcing the law and honoring the victims’ and their families’ great pain and loss.
Additionally, the Supreme Court of India sentenced Prabhunath Singh to seven years in jail concurrently for the attempted murder accusation under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The fact that he received a dual sentence emphasizes the seriousness of his acts and shows that the court is committed to maintaining the rule of law. It shows that he is being held accountable for both the attempted murder and the actual killings.
Distinguished justices, S K Kaul, AS Oka, and Vikram Nath, made up the bench that rendered this landmark judgment. For the unfortunate deaths of Daroga Rai and Rajendra Rai, they found Prabhunath Singh guilty of culpable homicide amounting to murder. The peaceful village of Chhapra in Bihar was the scene of these upsetting events in March 1995, leaving a permanent mark on the neighborhood and the state’s collective memory. The Supreme Court has specifically ordered Bihar’s Home Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure Prabhunath Singh is apprehended as soon as possible, demonstrating its dedication to justice and the prompt implementation of its decisions. He must appear in court on September 1 so that the judge may decide how much of a sentence to inflict.
The Additional Sessions Judge of Fast Track Court-III in Patna, who presided over this case, granted Prabhunath Singh’s acquittal in a decision dated October 24, 2008, adding a twist to the almost three decades-long legal story. On December 2, 2021, the Patna High Court confirmed this ruling, much to the chagrin of those who were fighting for the victims’ rights. The central event in this case is Prabhunath Singh reportedly opening fire on the victims after they revealed that they had voted for the Janata Dal party. It is noteworthy because Prabhunath Singh was running at the time as a Bihar People’s Party candidate.
In conclusion, the Supreme Court’s decision to sentence Prabhunath Singh to life in prison for the 1995 double murder case represents a resounding commitment to maintaining the rule of law, providing justice for victims, and enforcing the law’s prohibition on holding public individuals accountable for their deeds. The idea that no one is above the law, regardless of their status or political power, is furthered by this judgment, which serves as a ray of hope for those who have waited patiently for justice to be delivered.
