On Wednesday, the Supreme Court emphasized that its doors remain “always open” to hear the demands and suggestions of protesting farmers after they declined to engage with a committee formed by the Punjab government, as reported by PTI. The Punjab government informed the apex court that despite multiple detailed meetings with Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a farmer leader on an indefinite hunger strike, the farmers had rejected discussions with the state’s high-powered committee. According to Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh, the committee had invited farmers for talks on December 17, but the protesters did not respond.

Singh suggested that while efforts to persuade the farmers continued, they should be allowed to bring their grievances directly to the court. Agreeing with the recommendation, the bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan clarified, “The court’s doors are always open to any suggestion or demand by farmers, either directly or through their authorized representatives.” The court also expressed concern over Dallewal’s health and directed the Punjab government to provide immediate medical assistance.

Dallewal, a 70-year-old cancer patient, has been on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana since November 26, demanding a legal guarantee for MSP on crops, among other demands. Although he had previously refused medical aid, a team of specialists from Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala has been monitoring his condition around the clock.
In addition to Dallewal’s 23-day hunger strike, the farmers have planned a three-hour ‘rail roko’ protest at 52 locations across Punjab.
