Supreme Court Halts Madras HC Order, Pauses Probe Into Isha Foundation; CJI Seeks Clarity on Allegations
New Delhi: In a significant reprieve for spiritual leader Sadhguru, the Supreme Court has stayed a Madras High Court order directing Tamil Nadu police to investigate complaints against the Isha Foundation. The top court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, took control of the case, asking the police to submit a status report.
The investigation was prompted by a petition filed by retired professor S Kamaraj, alleging his daughters, aged 42 and 39, had been “brainwashed” into residing at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore. However, both women, presented in court, confirmed that they were staying at the ashram willingly.
In response to the high court’s directive, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Isha Foundation, denied the allegations. He stated that the incidents in question, including a child abuse charge against a doctor at the ashram, did not occur on the campus. “The first thing is that you cannot let an army of police in the establishment like this… What we will do is ask a judicial officer to visit the premises and talk to these two inmates,” said Chief Justice Chandrachud during the hearing.
One of the women appeared virtually before the court and reiterated her stay at the ashram was voluntary. She also accused her father of harassment over the past eight years. The court plans to further investigate by speaking privately with the two women, both of whom have been living at the ashram for over a decade, having joined in their 20s.
The Chief Justice also noted that a similar petition had been filed by the woman’s mother eight years ago, further complicating the matter.
