The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the Lokpal’s order asserting its jurisdiction to investigate high court judges, calling the development “disturbing.” The apex court also issued notices to the Centre, the Lokpal office, and the complainant before the anti-corruption ombudsman.
According to a PTI report, the Lokpal’s order was based on two complaints against a sitting additional high court judge. The complaints alleged that he influenced an additional district judge and another high court judge to rule in favour of a private company in a lawsuit filed against the complainant. It was further claimed that the private company had previously been a client of the high court judge when he was a practicing advocate.
In its order, the Lokpal directed that the complaints and relevant materials be forwarded to the Chief Justice of India for his consideration. The Lokpal bench, led by Justice A M Khanwilkar, clarified that while it had affirmed that high court judges fall within the ambit of Section 14 of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, it had not examined the merits of the allegations. The consideration of the complaints was deferred for four weeks, pending guidance from the Chief Justice of India, in line with statutory requirements under Section 20(4) of the Act.
