On Thursday, the Supreme Court granted bail to former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji in connection with the money laundering case tied to the alleged 2014 ‘cash-for-jobs’ scam. A bench comprising Justices Abhay S. Oka and Augustine George Masih imposed stringent conditions while granting bail.
The Supreme Court had reserved its decision on August 12 after hearing arguments from Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Sidharth Luthra, representing Senthil Balaji. Earlier, the High Court had rejected Balaji’s bail plea, stating that granting bail in such a case could send a negative message and go against public interest.
However, the High Court acknowledged that the petitioner had been in custody for over eight months and directed the Principal Special Court in Chennai to resolve the case within three months. The court also ordered the trial to be conducted on a day-to-day basis, in line with the Supreme Court’s guidelines.
