The Supreme Court of India has granted a divorce to a 2022-batch IPS officer, Shivangi Goel, and her estranged husband, Sahib Bansal, a Delhi-based businessman, as part of a settlement. The court directed Goel to publish an unconditional apology in leading national English and Hindi newspapers and on her social media platforms for causing hardship to her husband and in-laws.
Background of the Case
The couple married in 2015 and had a daughter in 2016. However, they separated, and Goel filed 15 cases against her in-laws, including domestic violence, cruelty, attempt to murder, unnatural offenses, and rape. Investigations and court proceedings found no evidence to support her claims, leading to the court’s decision.
Key Points of the Settlement
- Public Apology: Goel will publish an unconditional apology to her estranged husband and in-laws in prominent newspapers and on social media.
- Custody and Visitation Rights: The Supreme Court granted primary custody of the child to Goel, with visitation rights to Bansal. The court also granted police protection to Bansal and his family.
- Property Transfer: As part of the settlement, Goel’s mother will transfer three pieces of land in Aligarh to Bansal through a gift deed. Goel did not seek alimony or maintenance.
- No Further Harassment: The court cautioned Goel against using her position to cause any bodily or mental harm to Bansal and his family.
Court’s Observations
The Supreme Court noted that the family had suffered mental and physical harassment due to the false allegations and cases filed by Goel. The court emphasised that the apology was necessary to bring an amicable closure to the legal battle.
