On Sunday, Pakistan will elect Shehbaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) to be the country’s next prime minister.
With the backing of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and a nomination from the Pakistan Muslim League (N), Shehbaz Sharif is certain to become the next prime minister of Pakistan on Sunday.
Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which is imprisoned, has chosen Omar Ayub Khan as its prime minister.
Eighteen days after the Election Commission declared the results of the votes conducted on February 8, the National Assembly Secretariat revealed the poll schedule for the election of the government’s leader on Thursday.
In order to create a government, 133 of the 265 contested seats in the 266-member National Assembly had to be won by one of the parties.
The PTI-backed independent candidates secured 93 seats, while the PML-N, led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, secured 75 seats. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) got 17 seats, while the PPP, under former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, emerged in third place with 54 seats.
Imran Khan’s party’s chances were disrupted when the PML-N and PPP made the decision to establish a post-election alliance in order to become the government.
Shehbaz Sharif would lead Pakistan as prime minister once again if he is elected. Prior to the announcement of new elections in August 2023, he had been prime minister after Imran Khan’s government was overthrown in April 2022. He held the position for sixteen months.
Asif Ali Zardari, 68, of the PPP, will represent the coalition as its nominee for president under the terms of the power-sharing agreement. Zardari served as president from 2008 to 2013.
The nomination papers for the PM candidates can be turned in by Saturday at 2:00 PM, and the papers will be reviewed that same day.
