India is set to bolster its defense capabilities against aerial threats with the launch of Mission Sudarshan Chakra, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day. This cutting-edge security architecture is designed to protect Indian skies from enemy missiles, drones, and rockets, while enabling massive retaliation.
Key Features of Sudarshan Chakra
- Multi-Layered Defense Network: Sudarshan Chakra combines long-range radars, surveillance inputs from satellites, aircraft, UAVs, and interceptor missiles to neutralize aerial threats.
- S-400 Air Defense System Integration: The S-400 system will be part of this security architecture.
- Countering MIRV Threats: With Pakistan developing the MIRV-equipped Ababeel missile (2,200 km range), Sudarshan Chakra will neutralize threats before warheads separate to hit targets.
- Offensive Capability: Mission Sudarshan Chakra includes developing short, medium, and long-range ballistic and cruise missiles like Pralay and Nirbhay for precision targeting.
Development and Timeline
- Mission Objective: Protect Indian skies and enable massive retaliation against aerial threats.
- Expanded Security Shield: By 2035, all public places will be covered by an expanded nationwide security shield.
- Project Kusha Clearance: The Cabinet Committee on Security has cleared DRDO’s Project Kusha for extended-range interceptors by 2030.
