On Tuesday, just a day before the expected arrival of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, police detained Jewish activists who were demonstrating against US military assistance for Israel within a congressional building. The demonstrators, led by Jewish Voice for Peace, an activist organization, wore red T-shirts with the slogans “not in our name” and “Jews say stop arming Israel.” “Ceasefire now” and “Let Gaza live” were among the banners carried by some.

The moment the demonstrators gathered; the police operation took off. A closed “zone” was promptly announced by Capitol Police, and hundreds of protestors who would not leave were taken into custody. About 200 people were detained, according to the police. “Those who had come lawfully were warned to leave or risk being taken into custody. They didn’t stop,” according to a statement from the police.

The motive behind calling for the protest or demonstration was the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speech, which was scheduled to address Congress on Wednesday, invited by prominent members of both the Democratic and Republican parties. There has been no noticeable distinction in the major parties’ backing for Israel, the US’s most powerful Middle East partner.

JVP executive director Stefanie Fox stated in a statement, “For nine months, we’ve watched in horror as the Israeli government has carried out a genocide, armed and funded by the US Congress. The Biden administration has the power to end this horror today.”

Rather, our president is getting Netanyahu, and the leaders of Congress have extended an invitation to him to speak to the House. It’s enough. The public is telling Biden and Congress that an arms embargo is urgently needed to save lives. 400 people were reportedly taken into custody, although official numbers from Capitol Police are yet unknown.

The US government has a long history of uncompromising support for Israel, Washington has vetoed to protect Israel from facing Complications, and the United Nations Security Council resolutions that would have called for a ceasefire in Gaza was also vetoed three times by the United States.
