Given the field’s evolving nature, the Indian Army has formed an elite force to study and evaluate futuristic communication technologies such as 6G, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and quantum computing for military usage.
According to officials, the Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group, or STEAG, is responsible for developing technologies across the entire spectrum of wired and wireless networks. They stated that the formation of STEAG is part of the Army’s attempts to develop technology for the future battlefield.
It will be a premier organization, the first of its kind, equipped with the capability to harness niche technology, leverage modern-age solutions, and identify suitable cases for defence applications by fostering collaboration with academia and industry.
The elite unit would concentrate on all emerging key technological fields, such as electronic exchanges, mobile communications, software-defined radios, electronic warfare systems, 5G and 6G networks, quantum technologies, AI, ML, and so on, he stated.
The high-tech unit will conduct technical reconnaissance, evaluation, creation, and administration of core ICT solutions, as well as provide user interface support through maintenance and upgrades to current technologies present in the environment.
THIS IS ONE EXAMPLE OF EXTENSIVE MILITARY ADVANCEMENT GOING ON
Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande has emphasized the necessity for the military to acquire new technologies in response to the changing nature of warfare. “Aligning itself with the tenets of Atmanirbhar Bharat and StartUp India, STEAG will help bridge the divide between the armed forces on the one hand and industry and academia on the other,” a senior government official said on condition of anonymity.
“The new Center of Excellence is projected to be a game changer in promoting self-reliance in high-end communication technologies, which have previously been monopolized by select countries with advanced economies and research environments,” he said.
The Army believes that communications will be a key part of military operations. “In the fast-evolving technologies for the battlefield, the side with better communication technologies and the ability to connect the various constituents for information sharing will have an edge over its adversary,” a different government official stated.
He stated that modern warfare needs the introduction of new equipment to provide continuous communication assistance to units and formations throughout operations.
“To imbibe such advancements in technology, the Indian Army has raised this groundbreaking technology-oriented unit, STEAG, which will bolster its capabilities in the digital domain,” he went on to say.
