Stampede Erupted at a Temple in Goa

A disturbing video shared by news agency PTI shows the moment a deadly stampede occurred at the Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village, Goa, during the early hours of Saturday. The incident took place amid the Lairai Zatra festival, resulting in the deaths of at least six people and leaving 60 others injured.
The tragedy unfolded around 3 a.m. on a sloped area near the temple, where thousands of devotees from Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka had gathered. According to Maem MLA Premendra Shet, the chaos began when some individuals fell and were subsequently trampled as the crowd pushed forward.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa to meet the injured and expressed his sorrow, stating that he is personally overseeing the response and ensuring necessary assistance is provided. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with Sawant, assuring full central government support. In a message on X, Modi extended condolences to the grieving families and wished a swift recovery for the injured.
State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed that four victims were taken to Mapusa hospital and two to a local health center. Eight of the injured remain in critical condition, with two shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim. A special ICU equipped with ventilators has been set up, and nodal officers are tracking each patient’s progress. Rane added that five ambulances were immediately dispatched and all necessary medical arrangements are in place.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to identify the precise cause of the stampede.
