The Sports Ministry has suspended the Sanjay Singh-led new Wrestling Federation of India body over a ‘hasty’ announcement to hold nationals. It was announced that the competition will be held in Gonda, the stronghold of Brij Bhushan Singh.
The ministry cited that the president of the newly elected body – Sanjay Kumar Singh – announced on 21 December that the junior national competitions will begin before the end of this year. The ministry detailed that this was against the rules, and at least a 15-day notice was needed so that the wrestlers could prepare.
“Such decisions (holding nationals) are to be taken by the Executive Committee, before which agendas are required to be placed for consideration, and a minimum notice period for an EC meeting is 15 clear days, and quorum is 1/3rd of representatives,” the ministry said in its press release.
After the suspension, Sanjay Singh, the newly elected WFI President, said that they will fight the legal battle to counter this suspension, as this is totally illegal. He also said that his legal team is looking into this matter and will soon approach the court.
Apart from this reason, political analysts are of the view that the suspension of the newly elected WFI body can be a part of BJP’s outreach to the Jat community, as the Bhartiya Janta Party cannot let one of the most influential and big communities of North India right before the general election.
The suspension of the newly elected WFI body came a day after UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled a 51-foot statue of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh in Moradabad on his birth anniversary.
