In a surprising turn of events, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) chief, Luis Rubiales, finds himself at the center of a storm after kissing star player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the Women’s World Cup celebrations. The incident, which occurred following Spain’s victory over England, has sparked outrage and drawn criticism from the highest echelons of Spanish leadership.
Insufficient Apology Sparks Backlash
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has labeled Rubiales’ apology as “insufficient,” adding that the football boss must go beyond his current efforts to address the situation. The unsolicited kiss, which took place in a moment of jubilation, has caused a significant uproar within Spain. Sanchez, known for his government’s stance on sexual consent and harassment, emphasized that the gesture was “unacceptable” and necessitates a stronger response.
Government’s Call for Action
The RFEF announced the decision to convene an extraordinary general assembly on Friday to urgently address the incident. Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz and Equality Minister Irene Montero were among those demanding swift action. Diaz went as far as calling for Rubiales’ resignation, asserting that his apologies hold no weight. Montero emphasized the importance of consent, describing the non-consensual kiss as a form of “sex violence.”
Defending the Gesture
Rubiales attempted to clarify his actions, stating that the kiss was made in the heat of the moment, devoid of ill intent. He expressed regret over the commotion it caused and acknowledged the need for greater care when representing the federation. Rubiales also underlined his positive relationship with Hermoso and reiterated that the incident was not meant to be controversial.
Mixed Reactions from Players
Jennifer Hermoso herself responded with a playful video posted on Instagram, downplaying the incident. She explained that the gesture was a spontaneous display of affection and gratitude due to the immense joy of winning the World Cup. The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) highlighted the “seriousness” of the incident and called for appropriate measures to be taken, citing protocol against sexual violence.
Leadership’s Stance on Women’s Empowerment
Prime Minister Sanchez, known for his feminist beliefs, expressed his commitment to women’s empowerment. He appointed a record number of 11 women to 17 cabinet posts upon taking office. Sanchez affirmed his belief in a bright future for women’s sports, particularly women’s football. However, his reception of Rubiales at a celebration for Spain’s winning team reflected the tension surrounding the incident.
Continued Turmoil in Spanish Football
This controversy is not the first upheaval in Spanish women’s football. Last September, 15 players expressed their discontent with the Spanish federation, particularly with coach Jorge Vilda and his strict methods. Their protest disrupted Spain’s preparations for the World Cup, shedding light on internal issues within the team.
As Spain’s footballing community grapples with this recent scandal, it remains to be seen how the RFEF will respond during the extraordinary general assembly and what impact this incident will have on the ongoing conversation about women’s empowerment and gender equality in sports.
