The countries of Spain, Ireland, and Norway recognise Palestine by 28th May 2024. Spain, Ireland, and Norway to formally recognise the Palestinian state by 28th May 2024. The latest development comes as a result of the war in Gaza, triggering a catastrophe and famine-like situation in the Hamas-held enclave. Each of them stated, on his part, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris said on Wednesday that a “two-State solution is the only credible path to peace and security for Israel, for Palestine, and for their peoples.”

“Today Ireland recognises the state of Palestine. We believe that recognition will contribute to peace and reconciliation in the Middle East.”

While the Spanish Prime Minister stated, in an address to MPs in Spain’s Congress today, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said, “Echoing the majority sentiment of the Spanish people, next Tuesday, May 28, Spain will approve the recognition of the State of Palestine in the Council of Ministers. The time has come to move from words to action. For peace, justice and coherence.” And the Norwegian prime minister said, “In the middle of a war, with tens of thousands of dead and injured, we must keep alive the only thing that can provide a safe home for both Israelis and Palestinians: two states that can live in peace with each other.”

The Palestinian Authority, Fatah, and its rival Hamas have welcomed this decision, while Israel has shown strong discontent with this decision. The Israeli Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, stated, “I’m sending a clear and unequivocal message to Ireland and Norway: Israel will not remain silent in the face of those undermining its sovereignty and endangering its security.” He also warned the Spanish Prime Minister that if his nation recognizes Palestine on 28th May, he will also face similar consequences. Now the Israeli Foreign Minister is clearly hinting at showing support for Spain’s breakaway region Catalonia. While the White House stated that US President Joe Biden was a “strong supporter” of the two-state solution and believed “a Palestinian state should be realized through direct negotiations, not through unilateral recognition.”
