Meerut/Bareilly: The Samajwadi Party’s Sambhal MLA, Iqbal Mahmood, along with the party’s district president, Asgar Ali Ansari, provided financial aid to the families of three individuals injured during the violence in Sambhal on November 24. The unrest occurred during a court-ordered Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) inspection of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid.
Following instructions from SP president Akhilesh Yadav, Mahmood distributed checks of ₹2 lakh each to the families at his residence in Mohalla Miyan Sarai. The beneficiaries included the families of Mohd Azeem from Shahbazpur Kala (Asmoli police station area) and Shariq and Rehan from Mohalla Kot Garvi (Sambhal city). All three injured individuals are currently in judicial custody.
Ansari emphasised that the financial support was part of the party’s continued efforts under the guidance of their leader. Earlier, on December 30, an SP delegation visited the families of five individuals who died in the violence, providing ₹5 lakh each at the PWD Guest House. The deceased were identified as Mohd Naeem and Ayan from Kot Garvi (Sambhal city), Kaif from Turtipur Ilha (Nakhasa police station area), Roman from Hayatnagar, and Bilal from Sarai Tareen.
The violence erupted on November 24 during the second phase of the court-ordered survey, which followed a November 19 petition alleging that the mosque was built on the site of a demolished Shri Harihar temple in the 16th century. A large crowd clashed with police during the survey, resulting in stone-pelting, arson, and gunfire. Five people lost their lives, and several others, including police officers, sustained injuries.
