Today morning, December 27, South Korea and the South Korean entertainment industry woke up to the shocking news of the passing away of the talented actor, Lee Sun Gyun. It is being speculated that he took his own life owing to the immense pressure he was experiencing due to allegations of being involved in a drug scandal. He was also under police investigation and had dropped out of several projects because of his drug case.
The 48-year-old actor was found unconscious in a parked car. It was reported that he had left his house, leaving behind a note that resembled a suicide note. According to the South Korean police, they received an emergency call at 10:12 AM from a woman reporting that her husband had left the house after writing a note that resembled a will. The police responded quickly and later located a vehicle in a park situated in Jongno-gu around 10:30 AM, with a man unconscious within it. Authorities later confirmed that the deceased individual was actor Lee Sun Gyun.
HODU&U Entertainment, the agency representing Lee Sun Gyun, has released an official statement regarding the actor’s sudden passing. They wrote that they were sorry to bring the sad news of actor Lee Sun Gyun’s passing away this morning. They wrote that no words can explain this kind of loss and asked people to refrain from spreading any false facts based on speculations so that the deceased’s final journey can be peaceful. They said that a private funeral would be held for the actor in the presence of his family and close friends.
Following the sudden passing of the actor, a wave of cancellations has swept throughout the Korean entertainment industry. The scheduled production presentation on December 27 of TVN’s upcoming drama in January, ‘Marry My Husband,’ was called off due to this tragic event. Furthermore, a scheduled interview with actor Kim Sung Kyu for his movie ‘Noryang: Deadly Sea’ on this same day has also been canceled. More event cancellations are expected to follow this week, as fellow actors and industry professionals have been overwhelmed with sorrow and despair after this tragic news.
Lee Sun Gyun has been under investigation for drug abuse since October. He had consistently denied the accusations filed against him. It was only yesterday that the actor said in a statement that he had inhaled a substance through his nose that he had taken for a sleeping pill. The substance in question is believed to be ketamine powder, the same drug that took Matthew Perry’s life this year, back in October.
Lee Sun-kyun was best known for his roles in films like Helpless (2012), All About My Wife (2012), and A Hard Day (2014). Globally, he has been recognized for his role in Parasite, an Academy Award-winning film directed by Bong Joo-ho. He had also received a nomination for an International Emmy Award. He has also received a Best Actor award from the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival for his role in the 2009 film, Paju.
