A mob attack at a security checkpoint in Manipur has left a soldier’s family missing, with suspicions of abduction. One occupant managed to escape, while the soldier’s father sustained injuries. Investigations are still underway.
A soldier’s mother and three other family members were taken away by a mob at a security checkpoint close to Kangchup Chingkhong village in Kangpokpi district, and they are now reported missing in a disturbing incident that happened in Manipur. The soldier’s 65-year-old father, who was also traveling with them, was saved by security forces on Tuesday, according to a defense source. Nevertheless, he was hospitalized in critical condition after suffering several injuries.
In a statement shared on social media, the Manipur Police said that one person inside the car was able to get out. The other four people, including the one who escaped, are still missing. To ensure the safe return of the missing people, the police are actively searching for them.
The police suspect that armed Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) (United) cadres may have abducted the soldier’s family members, including his mother, and are holding them at a secret location. The soldier is not currently stationed in Manipur; he is from the Kuki-Zo community. The incident happened close to the boundaries of Imphal West, a district predominantly inhabited by Meitei people, and Kangpokpi, a hill district largely inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community.
Following a more than two-hour-long gunfight in the same area between armed members of the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, the abduction took place. Numerous people were hurt in the skirmish, including bystanders who were caught in the crossfire.
In related news, two people, identified as Satgougin Hangsing (28) and Lhunkhosei Chongling (30), were taken into custody on Tuesday in relation to the recent kidnapping of two teenagers from Imphal. They turned up in court after being captured in the Senapati district. While the investigations have been in progress, the court has ordered that they be held in police custody until November 17.
