The Congress has nominated Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist of the Gandhi family, to contest against Smriti Irani in the traditional Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. However, according to Union Minister Irani, her true opponent is Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress general secretary. Irani expressed her stance, stating, “I do not want to engage in childish politics.”
She pointed out that while Rahul Gandhi chose to contest from nearby Rae Bareli instead of Amethi, his sister Priyanka has been actively campaigning behind the scenes. Irani emphasised that, despite Rahul Gandhi’s absence from Amethi, Priyanka’s influence is significant, referring to her extensive campaigning efforts in the region. Both Amethi and Rae Bareli have historical ties to the Gandhi family, with Sonia Gandhi representing Rae Bareli for five consecutive terms and Rahul Gandhi winning multiple terms from Amethi before losing to Irani in 2019.
Despite his defeat, Rahul continued his tenure as an MP by winning from Kerala’s Wayanad constituency in the same election. In the current Lok Sabha polls, Rahul contested from Wayanad again and was later named as the Congress candidate from Rae Bareli, which his mother Sonia vacated. Meanwhile, Sharma was named as the Congress candidate against Irani in Amethi. Both constituencies are set to vote in the fifth phase on May 20.
