The Himachal Pradesh Congress government, led by Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, appeared to have overcome the political crisis.
On Thursday, the speaker of the Himachal legislature disqualified six Congress MLAs for cross-voting for the BJP in the Rajya Sabha election. The members have been disqualified under the anti-defection law.
“Six MLAs who contested on the Congress emblem invoked anti-defection rules against themselves… I announce that the six people are no longer members of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, effective immediately,” Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathanian announced.
However, the Congress government has limited the political crisis caused by cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha election and a minister’s revolt. The Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government cleared the budget on Wednesday. Minister Vikramaditya Singh announced that he will not seek resignation until talks with leaders are completed, giving the Congress a respite.
HIMACHAL POLITICAL CRISIS AND LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
- On Tuesday, the Congress sought to disqualify six rebel MLAs who voted for a BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a Congress stalwart, was defeated by BJP’s Harsh Mahajan in a random drawing after both candidates got 34 votes.
- The disqualified MLAs are Rajinder Rana, Sudhir Sharma, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Devinder Kumar Bhutoo, Ravi Thakur, and Chetanya Sharma.
- After voting against the Congress candidate, the Congress and three independent MLAs are camping out at a guest home in Panchkula, Haryana, which is run by the BJP. They attended the assembly meeting on Wednesday.
- Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania evicted 15 BJP MLAs on Wednesday, including Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, for misconduct and allegedly shouting slogans in the Speaker’s chamber.
- Following the cross-vote, a BJP delegation led by Opposition Leader Jai Ram Thakur visited Raj Bhavan on Wednesday morning and asked Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla to guarantee that the Finance Bill was passed exclusively through voting. However, the Congress government was able to enact the budget.
- Congress lawmaker Vikramaditya Singh, who had announced his resignation as a minister, stated on Wednesday evening that he would not proceed with his resignation until a dialogue with party officials was completed. After meeting with party central observers, he declared that the government had never been in crisis.
- In response to the disqualification of Congress MLAs, he stated, “It is not right for me to say anything on this as of now” and added that he will decide the next course of action after meeting with central observers. “Our observers have arrived, and they have witnessed and comprehended the situation. The speaker has made this decision. So I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to comment on the subject. As I have stated, we will consult with the observers and determine the next steps,” he said.
- As the party managed to avoid a crisis, Chief Minister Sukhu denied suggestions that he was retiring. He stated that “Neither the high command nor anyone else has asked me to resign,” and that the Congress government in the state will serve out its five-year term.
- As the crisis unfolded, the Congress leadership in Delhi dispatched three observers — Bhupesh Baghel, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and DK Shivakumar — to Shimla to manage it. The party had stated that it could take “tough steps.”
- Before the Rajya Sabha election on Tuesday, Chief Minister Sukhu claimed that the MLAs had been “abducted” by the Haryana Police and the CRPF.
