The Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) inquiry into the alleged ‘adulteration’ of Tirupati Laddus has been temporarily paused as the matter is now under the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction, according to a statement by the Andhra Pradesh DGP, quoted by PTI on Tuesday.
“The SIT needs to first understand the process, study it, and gather all the necessary information, but in the meantime, the Supreme Court has issued an order, so we have halted the investigation,” said Andhra DGP Dwaraka Tirumala Rao in his statement.
On Monday, the SIT conducted an inspection of the flour mill in Tirumala, where the ghee used for making laddus is stored and tested in a laboratory. The Supreme Court, on the same day, raised concerns about keeping religious matters out of politics while questioning Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s public claims that animal fat was allegedly used in the preparation of Laddus under the previous Jagan Mohan Reddy government.
“From the report, it is clear that this is not the ghee being used. How could you make such a public statement without certainty?” remarked a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan. The bench further noted, “The situation is unclear, and it seems the rejected ghee was what was tested. If you had already ordered an investigation, why go to the media?” This was addressed to senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Andhra Pradesh.
