During a recent event at Brown University in the United States, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was confronted by a Sikh student regarding the Congress party’s historical actions toward the Sikh community, particularly the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and Operation Blue Star. Although the exchange occurred on April 21, the video surfaced online on May 3.
The student questioned Gandhi’s previous statements, suggesting that, under the current BJP government, Sikhs might face restrictions on wearing religious symbols like the kara and turban. He highlighted what he perceived as a contradiction in Gandhi’s stance on fearless politics, given the Congress party’s own complicated history with Sikh rights. The student also referred to the sentencing of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar for his role in the 1984 riots, asserting that the party had failed to reconcile with the Sikh community after the violence.
In response, Rahul Gandhi acknowledged the Congress party’s past mistakes, noting that many occurred before his time in politics. He stated, “A lot of those mistakes happened when I was not there. But I’m more than happy to take responsibility for everything that the Congress party has ever done wrong in its history.” Gandhi also emphasized his personal connection with the Sikh community, mentioning his visits to the Golden Temple and his public condemnation of the events of the 1980s.
The exchange has reignited discussions about the Congress party’s role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and its efforts toward reconciliation with the Sikh community. Critics argue that, while Gandhi’s acknowledgment is a step forward, more concrete actions are necessary to address the historical grievances and rebuild trust.
