Before inaugurating multiple development projects in Delhi on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the day as a significant milestone for the city’s progress. “Today marks an important day for Delhi’s development. At a program in Ashok Vihar, I will be inaugurating and laying the foundation stones for various initiatives that will enhance the ‘Ease of Living’ for Delhi’s residents,” PM Modi shared on X (formerly Twitter).
The prime minister’s agenda includes inaugurating 1,675 newly-constructed flats for residents of JJ (Jhuggi Jhopri) clusters in Ashok Vihar, the World Trade Centre (WTC) at Nauroji Nagar, General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Type-II Quarters at Sarojini Nagar, and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Integrated Office Complex in Dwarka. Additionally, he will lay the foundation stone for three Delhi University projects, collectively valued at ₹600 crore. These projects comprise the Eastern Campus at Surajmal Vihar, the Western Campus at Dwarka, and Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh, which will feature state-of-the-art facilities.
The naming of Veer Savarkar College after the right-wing ideologue has sparked a political debate. The Congress accused the BJP of “glorifying those who submitted mercy petitions to the British,” while the BJP, aligned with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), countered by accusing the Congress of identifying itself through “insulting great individuals.”
Meanwhile, the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), currently led by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), a Congress-affiliated student body, adds yet another layer to the political discourse surrounding these developments.
