Sign of Relief to AAP as Supreme Court Grants Interim Bail to Kejriwal Till June 1
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Arvind Kejriwal, requested the bench to grant Kejriwal interim bail till June 4, the date of declaration of results. However, the bench maintained its stand and said Kejriwal would have to surrender on June 2.
In a significant development in the case Arvind Kejriwal Vs Directorate of Enforcement, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to jailed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal till June 1. The two-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta passed the order.
The Supreme Court imposed certain conditions on Arvind Kejriwal: He shall furnish bail bonds of 50,000 rupees with one surety of the like amount to the satisfaction of the Jail Superintendent, he shall not visit the office of the Chief Minister and Delhi Secretariat, he shall be bound by the statements made on his behalf that he shall not sign official files unless it is required and necessary for obtaining clearance/approval of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, he will not make any comments regarding his role in the present case, he will not interact with any of the witnesses and/or have access to any official files connected to the case.
The bench noted that the liquor policy case was registered by ED on August 22 and arrested Arvind Kejriwal in March 2024, nearly after one and a half years. The Supreme Court recently hinted at granting interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal in the wake of Parliamentary elections.
Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the Enforcement Directorate, submitted his opposition to the idea of granting interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal.
Yesterday, the Enforcement Directorate filed an affidavit in the top court opposing the interim bail to Kejriwal.
The Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, today stated in court that Amrit Pal Singh, detained under the National Security Act, has also approached the court for bail to contest in elections. Over this, Justice Khanna said, “that (Amrit Pal Singh case) is something different.” “Let us not put it in a straight jacket like that; we are passing an order giving him interim relief till June 1, 2024…we will upload the order by evening,” Justice Khanna said, reports Live Law.
Justice Khanna mentioned that the final argument in Arvind Kejriwal’s case would be concluded next week.
