Shubman Gill's Historic Double Century Powers India to 564/7 on Day 2 of Edgbaston Test

Birmingham, UK

Team India, led by a magnificent double century from Shubman Gill, dominated Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. By tea, India stood tall at 564/7, with Shubman Gill unbeaten on 265 and Akash Deep on 0**.

India resumed the second session at 419/6, with Shubman Gill on 168 and Washington Sundar on 1**. The duo played cautiously early on but soon shifted gears. Gill launched a stunning counter-attack against Shoaib Bashir and Josh Tongue, striking two boundaries and a six in quick succession.

A four through deep backward square leg brought India to 450 runs in 117.3 overs. Though Shubman Gill remained stranded on 199 for a while, Sundar kept the scoreboard ticking with a four and a six off Tongue.

Shubman Gill Reaches Maiden Double Ton

Gill finally reached his maiden Test double century in style with a single off Tongue in the 122nd over. He became only the third Indian to score a Test double hundred in England, after Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid.

Post his milestone, Gill batted with greater freedom. He reverse-swept Bashir, guided another for four, and punished part-time bowler Harry Brook for three consecutive boundaries — including two powerful drives down the ground.

Gill Breaks Gavaskar’s Record in England

With a flurry of runs, Shubman Gill surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s record to register the highest individual Test score by an Indian batter on English soil. A sharp cut against Brydon Carse pushed India past the 500-run mark in 127.1 overs.

He soon reached 250 in 348 balls, smashing 29 fours and three sixes. The partnership with Sundar flourished, crossing the century mark for the seventh wicket in 136 balls.

Washington Sundar Falls After Gritty Knock

England finally found relief when Joe Root’s part-time spin clean bowled Washington Sundar for 42 runs off 103 balls, including three fours and a six. The 144-run stand between him and Gill was crucial in India’s domination.

A Recap of the First Session

Earlier in the day, India began the first session at 310/5, with Gill (114) and Ravindra Jadeja (41)** at the crease. Gill and Jadeja extended their stand past 100 runs in 143 balls. Jadeja, in fine touch, struck two boundaries off Chris Woakes and completed his 23rd Test half-century.

India hit the 350-run mark in 94.5 overs, and the pair added 150 runs before the drinks break. Gill’s classy shot-making continued, and he brought up his first Test 150 — only the second Indian captain to do so in England after Mohammad Azharuddin.

A sweeping reverse shot by Gill and a six by Jadeja off Bashir helped India reach 400 runs in the 106th over. Jadeja’s innings ended at 89 (137), caught off Tongue, with India at 414/6 in 107.3 overs.

Day One Highlights

India ended Day 1 at 310/5, thanks to strong contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Karun Nair (31), who built an 80-run stand after the early dismissal of KL Rahul (2).

Gill and Jadeja then partnered for 99 unbeaten runs to close the day.

Brief Score at Tea – Day 2:
