In a significant development, star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is set to make a comeback to the Mumbai squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Andhra Pradesh. The four-day fixture, scheduled from January 12th to 15th at the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy Ground in Mumbai, marks Iyer’s return to red-ball cricket after a hiatus, with his last appearance for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy dating back to 2018.
Known for his prolific batting skills, Shreyas Iyer’s inclusion in the Mumbai team comes on the heels of his exclusion from the Indian squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The Mumbai batsman, who boasts an impressive record of 5407 runs in 67 first-class matches, including 13 centuries, will be eager to make his mark in the domestic tournament and gain valuable match practice ahead of India’s crucial five-match Test series against England, commencing on January 25th in Hyderabad.
The Mumbai squad, led by Ajinkya Rahane, faces the challenge without the services of Sarfaraz Khan and pacer Tushar Deshpande, who are committed to the India ‘A’ team for the clash against England Lions in Ahmedabad. However, the team will receive a boost with the inclusion of fast bowler Sylvester Dsouza and opener Amogh Bhatkal.
Mumbai, a formidable side with 41 Ranji Trophy titles to their name, kicked off their 2023/24 season with an impressive victory over Bihar in Patna, securing seven points from the win. As they gear up to take on Andhra Pradesh, who earned three points in their previous match against Bengal, Mumbai aims to continue their dominant form in the tournament.
The official statement from the Mumbai Cricket Association’s Senior Selection Committee, comprising Rajeev Kulkarni (Chairman), Sanjay Patil, Ravi Thaker, Jeetendra Thackeray, and Kiran Powar, confirmed the squad for the Ranji Trophy clash. The selected players include Ajinkya Rahane (c), Shreyas Iyer, Jay Bista, Bhupen Lalwani, Amogh Bhatkal, Suved Parkar, Prasad Pawar (WK), Hardik Tamore (WK), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Atharva Ankolekar, Mohit Awasthi, Dhaval Kulkarni, Roystan Dias, and Sylvester Dsouza.
As the cricketing spotlight shifts to the domestic circuit, Shreyas Iyer’s return to the Mumbai squad adds an extra layer of excitement to the upcoming Ranji Trophy clash against Andhra Pradesh. With a star-studded lineup and the experience of seasoned campaigners, Mumbai aims to build on their early-season success and continue their pursuit of glory in the prestigious tournament. As fans eagerly await Iyer’s red-ball comeback, the Ranji Trophy promises to showcase top-notch cricketing action in the days to come.
