A Tunisian gunman aged forty-five is alleged to have shot two Swedish football fans in Brussels. He took his last breath on Tuesday following police shooting him in a Café, as stated by Belgian authorities. At the same time, the Prime Minister of Sweden asked to strengthen the EU border security personnel.
Associating himself with the Islamic State, the gunman accepted responsibility, as seen in a video posted online. He is alleged to have shot and killed two Swedish nationals and injured another one in central Brussels on Monday.
Annelies Verliden, the Interior Minister, posted a statement on the social media platform X (previously Twitter) mere hours following Prime Minister Alexander De Croo’s statement, terming the shooting a brutal “terrorist attack.” The post read, “The perpetrator of the terrorist attack in Brussels has been identified and died.”
Unfortunately, the shooting occurred at a critical time of increased security concerns in a few European countries connected to the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, a Belgian federal prosecutor stated that there was as yet no evidence that the gunmen/attacker had any connection to the war between Israel and Palestinian militants.
In August of this year, Sweden had increased its terrorism alert to the second-highest level and alerted to a rise in threats opposing Swedes in Sweden and abroad following Quran burnings that enraged Muslims and triggered threats from jihadists.
On Tuesday, during a news conference, Ulf Kristersson, Sweden’s Prime Minister, made a statement that security should be increased, and Sweden, as well as the EU, was in need of better border control.
Kristersson said, “I understand that many Swedes are afraid and angry,” and further added, “This is a time for more security; we can’t be naive.”
The alleged attacker named himself Abdesalem Al Guilani in a video posted online. It could not be confirmed whether he acted alone or had accomplices.
De Croo said, “The perpetrator targeted specifically Swedish supporters who were in Brussels to attend a Red Devils soccer match. Two Swedish compatriots passed away. A third person is recovering from severe injuries.”
Belgium was the host of Sweden in a qualifying match of Euro 2024. Unfortunately, the match was cut off at halftime.
