Meerut: A court in Saharanpur has ordered the Uttar Pradesh police to register a criminal case against the in-laws of a 30-year-old woman, accusing them of injecting her with an HIV-infected syringe after her family failed to meet dowry demands. Following the court’s directive, the police have lodged an FIR against her husband (32), brother-in-law (38), sister-in-law (35), and mother-in-law (56) under multiple IPC sections, including 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 328 (causing harm by administering poison), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and relevant dowry laws at the Gangoh police station.

According to the police, the alleged incident took place at the woman’s in-laws’ house in Haridwar in May 2024. The victim’s father told the court that he had spent nearly ₹45 lakh on her wedding in February 2023, providing a sub-compact SUV and ₹15 lakh in cash to the groom’s family. However, they later demanded an additional ₹10 lakh and a larger SUV.

The woman was reportedly harassed from the day of her marriage, with her in-laws humiliating her and even threatening to arrange another marriage for their son. She was thrown out of her marital home on March 25, 2023, and had lived with her parents for three months until the village panchayat intervened and sent her back. However, she soon faced renewed physical and mental torture.

In May 2024, the woman’s in-laws allegedly injected her with an HIV-infected syringe, leading to a rapid decline in her health. Medical tests confirmed that she was HIV-positive, whereas her husband tested negative.

Her father claimed that when he initially approached the police, Gangoh SHO Rogent Tyagi refused to register the case, instructing them to “first get orders from higher authorities.” When they escalated the matter to Saharanpur SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan, he allegedly ignored their plea. Left with no alternative, the family sought judicial intervention.

When contacted by The Times of India, SHO Tyagi denied the allegations. The case is currently under investigation.
