Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader, Shehla Rashid, has expressed a shift in her perspective on the situation in Kashmir, stating that “Kashmir is not Gaza.” In an interview with news agency ANI, Rashid revealed that she sympathized with stone pelters in Kashmir in 2010 but now appreciates the current situation. She emphasized that the region has moved beyond protests and sporadic incidents of insurgency and infiltrations.
Rashid credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s policies for the changes in Jammu and Kashmir. According to her, the present government, particularly the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, played a crucial role in bringing a political solution to the region without bloodshed.
This is not the first time Rashid has praised the developments in Jammu and Kashmir. In August of the same year, she commended the efforts of the Narendra Modi-led government and the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir for improving the human rights situation in the Valley.
Addressing her struggles at JNU, Rashid discussed the aftermath of the arrest of former research scholar Umar Khalid and JNU Student Union president Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of sedition and criminal conspiracy related to the northeast Delhi riots. She highlighted the impact on the university, stating that overnight, JNU went from being seen as an elite institution to facing backlash and becoming a target of criticism.
Rashid clarified that slogans like ‘Bharat Tere Tukde Honge’ and ‘Laal Salam’ were never raised at JNU, disputing the narratives associated with the university. The arrests of Khalid and Kumar occurred nearly two years ago, with Khalid facing charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his alleged role in the northeast Delhi riots.
Shehla Rashid’s evolving stance on Kashmir reflects a nuanced perspective on the region’s political developments, acknowledging the changes while crediting the present government for its role in achieving a bloodless political solution.
