In the highly anticipated World Cup semi-final clash between India and New Zealand, Mohammed Shami, the seasoned pacer, showcased his prowess by delivering a stunning spell that tilted the balance in favour of the Indian cricket team.
Facing a challenging situation with Jasprit Bumrah conceding 22 runs in his initial three overs, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma made a strategic decision to introduce Mohammed Shami into the bowling attack in the 5th over of the New Zealand innings. Shami, who had already made an impact in the tournament by dismissing New Zealand opener Will Young in the round-robin phase, once again proved his mettle.
On the first ball of his spell, Shami induced a sharp catch from wicketkeeper KL Rahul to dismiss Devon Conway for 13 runs off 15 balls. This early breakthrough set the tone for Shami’s impactful spell. In his second over, he claimed the crucial wicket of Rachin Ravindra, the third-highest run-scorer in the World Cup 2023 with 565 runs in 10 matches. Ravindra’s dismissal for 13 off 22 balls left New Zealand reeling at 40-2 within eight overs.
Shami’s ability to outsmart the opposition batsmen and deliver crucial breakthroughs showcased his experience and skill. His performance in the World Cup semi-final mirrored his earlier success against New Zealand in the tournament. In the previous encounter at Dharamsala, Shami replaced the injured Hardik Pandya and emerged as the star performer, securing a match-winning five-wicket haul. He cleaned up the Kiwi opener Will Young after Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj leaked 19 runs in the first eight overs. Shami’s figures in that match were an impressive five wickets for 54 runs in his 10 overs.
With this impactful spell in the semi-final, Shami’s contribution proved pivotal in putting India on top in a crucial knockout match. As India aimed for a spot in the World Cup final, Shami’s ability to deliver under pressure underscored his significance in the team’s bowling lineup. With 18 wickets in the 2023 World Cup, Shami continued to establish himself as India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in the history of the 50-over spectacle.
