A Karnataka woman told the judicial magistrate on Thursday that she was allegedly hounded by seven men and gang-raped over an interfaith relationship with a man. The complainant along with the man was staying in a booked lodged room in Hangul taluk, 80 km from Habuli, when the group of men allegedly stormed into the room and assaulted them. The incident took place on Monday. The man was also beaten up by the group while the woman was taken to a nearby forest area and gang-raped.

The complainant said that she was dragged to a forested area near Nalkuru cross of Hangal and sexually assaulted by all seven men, while her companion was also allegedly beaten up. A separate video of her plight has also been circulating on social media where the victim mentions that she pleaded with folded hands, but no one paid heed to her requests. “A group of 5-6 people rushed to the lodge and brought the duo out of the room. Later, they took the woman alone to a place and assaulted her and later dropped her on the road,” said Anshu Kumar, superintendent of police, Haveri.

The woman further claimed that she was dropped at a bus stop later from where she reached home. The woman maintains that she doesn’t know any of the accused but will be able to identify them if paraded before them.

Three of the seven suspects identified as Aftab Maqbul Ahmed Chandanakatti, Madarasab Mohammad Isak Mandakki, and Abdul Khader Jafersab Hanchinamani were arrested on Thursday after a staff member of the lodge filed a complaint on Wednesday morning. SP Anshu Srivastava further confirmed that the survivor’s account in front of the magistrate matched her video statement to the media.

Based on this new information, this case of moral policing will now be treated as a serious crime. “We are recasting the FIR that was initially filed, based on information available at that time. We will invoke Section 67D (rape by one or more people with common intention) against the accused”, said SP. Srivastava has also assured the survivor and her family of police protection.
