Devender Singh Rana, a senior BJP leader and current MLA from the Nagrota constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Thursday at 59 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Faridabad, Haryana, as confirmed by a party spokesperson. Originally a businessman, Rana transitioned to politics and was the younger brother of Union Minister Jitendra Singh. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and son. Once a close aide to Omar Abdullah, Rana switched to the BJP in October 2021 after previously representing the National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the recent Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, Rana secured the Nagrota seat with a significant lead, defeating his nearest rival, Joginder Singh of the JKNC, by 30,472 votes. Despite the BJP’s 2014 “Modi wave,” he had earlier won the Nagrota seat in the 2014 election on a National Conference ticket.
As the founder of JamKash Vehicleads, Rana transformed the car market in Jammu and Kashmir, establishing himself as North India’s top Maruti car dealer. He also expanded into media with the founding of TakeOne TV. Known for his strong connection to the Jammu division and close ties with local communities, Rana was a key figure in the region’s political landscape, particularly within the BJP. Politicians from various parties expressed their condolences on his passing.
As news of his death spread, colleagues, friends, and supporters gathered at his residence in Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, to offer their respects and support to his family. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha conveyed his sympathies, noting the country’s loss of a patriotic and respected leader dedicated to the welfare of the union territory’s people.
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti also expressed her condolences, posting on X: “Shocked to hear about the sudden demise of Devender Rana ji. Deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
