Authorities have intensified security at the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, following threats from right-wing groups advocating its demolition and provocative remarks from political figures.

Direct access to the tomb has been restricted for the past few days, with police confirming that these measures will remain in place until further notice. Located in Khultabad, about 30 km from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city, the site is under tight surveillance.

“There are no restrictions on vehicles, but barricades have been set up to slow traffic and monitor those heading toward the tomb. An SRPF (State Reserve Police Force) platoon is stationed for 24/7 security, with six officers continuously guarding the site,” said Khultabad police inspector Dhananjay Pharate.

Meanwhile, political tensions escalated as Shiv Sena factions clashed over the issue. Ambadas Danve of Shiv Sena (UBT), Leader of Opposition in the state legislative council, accused the Mahayuti government of misleading people and provoking unrest. “The Centre, through the Archaeological Survey of India, funds the tomb’s maintenance, yet both the central and state governments incite elements to demand its demolition,” he claimed.

In response, Shiv Sena leader and cabinet minister Sanjay Shirsat challenged opposition parties, suggesting they erect statues of Aurangzeb if they believed the tomb was vital to history. He asserted that Maharashtra had no place for Aurangzeb’s legacy.

Congress MP Kalyan Kale, an ally of Danve, argued that the controversy was politically motivated ahead of local body elections. “The tomb has existed for years, yet it’s gaining attention now only because elections are approaching,” he remarked.

Security forces remain on high alert as the situation unfolds.
