During the ongoing winter session of Parliament on Wednesday, Lok Sabha witnessed a major security breach incident, wherein two men entered its chambers from the visitor’s gallery. This caused commotion within the house and led to the immediate adjournment of the house. The entire incident was caught on camera.

In the recording, Members of Parliament were seen surrounding the intruders who breached the security to enter the lower house of Parliament. In addition, two other people were seen protesting outside the parliament with colored smoke. All four accused were later detained by Delhi Police, and an investigation is ongoing. One Lok Sabha intruder has reportedly been identified as Sagar Sharma, while the identity of the second intruder remains unknown. Two others protesting with smoke canisters outside Parliament, a woman, and a man, have been identified as 42-year-old Neelam from Haryana and 25-year-old Amol Shinde from Maharashtra, respectively.

The incident took place on the day the nation marks the 22nd Anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack. On December 13, 2001, terrorists linked to Pakistan-based terror outfits, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) attacked the Parliament complex and opened fire. The attack resulted in the death of nine people, including eight security personnel and the elimination of all five terrorists. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Draupadi Murmu, and various other leaders paid tributes to security personnel who sacrificed their lives in this attack.

Speaking to the media outside the Parliament, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said, “Suddenly, two young men around 20 years old jumped into the House from the visitor’s gallery and had canisters in their hands. These canisters were emitting yellow smoke. One of them was attempting to run towards the Speaker’s chair. They were shouting some slogans. The smoke could have been poisonous.”

Shortly after the scare, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the house and said, “Both of them have been nabbed, and the materials with them have also been seized. The two people outside the Parliament have also been arrested by Police…” The speaker called a meeting of MPs later in the day to discuss their concerns over this matter.

A thorough and in-depth investigation will have to be undertaken to unearth more details about the incident. Such recurring episodes of lapses in the security of Parliament point towards the weaknesses in the security architecture in place to protect the temple of Indian democracy. The latest incident underscores the urgent need to review the security measures in place and necessitates their strengthening to prevent such events from occurring in the future.
