In a seismic revelation, the former intelligence chief of Brazil, Alexandre Ramagem, finds himself at the centre of a federal police investigation, exposing a web of alleged political spying during the tumultuous era of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The investigation has laid bare an intricate organized crime group that thrived within Brazil’s intelligence agency, ABIN, under Ramagem’s stewardship. Disturbingly, this group reportedly operated as a shadow entity within ABIN, misusing its tools and services for illicit purposes.
Allegations and Dark Tactics
According to an official police statement, this covert group exploited ABIN’s resources to produce information for political and media manipulation, sought personal gains, and even obstructed police investigations. Their weapon of choice: a tracking software named FirstMile, provided by the Israeli company Cognyte. This software was allegedly used to monitor various targets, creating false narratives to serve their clandestine agenda.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, in a meticulous 38-page decision greenlighting search warrants, detailed the sinister modus operandi. Some members were tasked with monitoring and generating reports, while others purportedly fabricated connections between targets, including lawmakers and Supreme Court Justices, and criminal elements. The probe further exposed attempts to interfere in investigations involving two of Bolsonaro’s sons, Jair Renan and Flávio.
Ramagem’s Vigorous Defense
In a sharp rebuttal to the allegations, Alexandre Ramagem vehemently denied any involvement in accessing, using, or managing the controversial system. He disparaged the legal documents leading to the searches, dismissing them as a “salad of narratives” designed to criminally implicate him without substantive evidence. Reports suggest that ABIN personnel employed the tracking software over 30,000 times, with a staggering 1,800 instances specifically targeting politicians, journalists, lawyers, and adversaries of Bolsonaro’s government.
Bolsonaro’s Ties and the Unfolding Saga
It’s crucial to underscore that Bolsonaro appointed Ramagem to lead ABIN in May 2019, a move that drew criticism due to concerns about proximity to the president’s family. Notably, in October 2022, Brazil’s police took action, arresting two individuals and executing 25 search warrants related to this sprawling investigation.
Ongoing Revelations and the Political Landscape
On January 22, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes sanctioned the search and seizure of documents, electronic devices, and other items from 12 individuals, culminating in 21 warrants. Alongside this, federal police were granted authority to restrict Ramagem’s movements, preventing him from leaving the capital, Brasilia, without prior authorization. Strikingly, a request to suspend Ramagem from his duties as a federal lawmaker remains unaddressed.
As Ramagem gears up to run for mayor in Rio de Janeiro in the impending October elections, local reports hint at the involvement of Bolsonaro’s son, Carlos, in coordinating Ramagem’s social media campaign. This ongoing investigation casts a glaring spotlight on alleged abuses of power and illegal activities within Brazil’s intelligence agency during the previous administration, with political repercussions and public reactions anticipated as the case unfolds.
