On the contempt petition filed by ADR, hearing on it in The Supreme Court on March 11, rejected SBI’s request to seek more time to furnish data related to Electoral Bonds. The Supreme Court, while rejecting it, gave directions to SBI to provide all data to EC before the close of business hours on 12.03.2024.
According to the affidavit, SBI has ready records in which the date of purchase, denomination, and name of the buyer were recorded, and (about the political parties) the date of encashment and the denomination of the bonds encashed were recorded.
SBI Chairman further wrote that in respectful compliance with the aforesaid directions, before the close of business hours on March 12, 2024, a record of this information was made available to the Election Commission Of India (ECI) by hand delivering in digital form (Password protected).
As per the directions of the Supreme Court, “the date of purchase of each electoral bond, the name of the purchaser, and the denomination of the Electoral Bond purchased has been furnished,” the letter said.
The letter also reveals that a total of 22,217 bonds were purchased out of which 22,030 were redeemed. The bonds that are not encashed by political parties are sent to the PM relief fund.
The letter is silent on the matching of bond purchasing and fund receiving by political parties. It is also not clear till now which party got the highest amount of money by electoral bond. On 15th March when EC uploads detailed data on their website will unfold the real transaction of money made by these bonds.
