On June 21, Sarat Pattnayak, the president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee, was allegedly sprayed with ink by a “disgruntled” party member.

The President of the OPCC was preparing to participate in the party’s statewide demonstration against the anomalies found in the 2024 National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) exam at that same moment. After the event, the offenders quickly left the Congress office and melted into the throng.

The event happened two weeks after the election results were announced. Despite increasing its number of assembly seats from nine in 2019 to fourteen this year, Congress’s share of the vote fell. Congress’s vote share this year was 13.26%, down from 17.02% in 2019. Mr. Pattnayak and every previous State Congress president who ran for office were unsuccessful.

At that point, a few party leaders had voiced their displeasure with the candidate selection procedure. The president of the State Congress had himself moved from his own area of Balangir to the Nuapada assembly constituency.

The President of Odisha Congress claimed that he is not familiar with the individuals. His eyes stung after being doused with the colorful liquid. Congress advocates nonviolence, yet some people follow the philosophy of Nathuram Godse. Congress has seen its share of highs and lows. He continued saying that he has been in politics for forty years. And the treatment anybody receives is totally surprising. The President of the Odisha Congress responded, saying this is the nature of politics.
