Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP today, accusing the party of escalating the situation.
The death toll from the Sambhal violence rose to four as of Monday morning, following clashes during a court-mandated survey of a mosque. The district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), barring the entry of outsiders until November 30. The survey, conducted in response to a plea alleging the mosque was built on the remains of a Hindu temple demolished by Mughal emperor Babur in 1529, triggered unrest. Gopal Sharma, a local lawyer representing the Hindu side, supported this claim.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held the BJP responsible for the escalating tensions, accusing the party of fostering division. “The biased and hasty actions of the state government in Sambhal are deeply unfortunate. My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. The BJP government’s insensitive handling of the situation, without hearing all sides, led to the loss of lives,” he wrote on X. He also called on the Supreme Court to intervene, stating, “The BJP’s exploitation of power to create rifts between Hindu and Muslim communities harms both the state and the nation.”
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also criticized the BJP and the state administration, accusing them of orchestrating the violence. According to Deputy Inspector General of Police (Moradabad) Muniraj G, the violence left three people dead on Sunday morning, with another succumbing to injuries during treatment on Monday. Twenty-four police and administrative personnel were injured, and 21 individuals, including two women, have been detained.
District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya emphasized the restrictions, which prohibit outsiders, social organizations, and public representatives from entering the district without prior permission. DIG Muniraj added that four FIRs had been registered in connection with the violence, and although the situation remains tense, it is currently under control. Internet services may be restored depending on the circumstances.
The unrest began on Sunday when a mob protesting the Jama Masjid survey clashed with security personnel, pelting stones and setting vehicles ablaze. According to a senior police official, shots were fired by miscreants, injuring the PRO of the superintendent of police, a circle officer, and several other personnel. Security forces remain deployed in key areas to maintain order.
