The man accused of attacking Saif Ali Khan during a burglary attempt on January 16 hid in the garden of the Bandra building where the actor resides for two hours after the stabbing, according to a police official on Monday. The suspect, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, had changed his name to Vijay Das. Arrested on Sunday, the 30-year-old initially misled investigators by claiming he was a Kolkata resident. However, police uncovered his true identity and Bangladeshi nationality after retrieving his school-leaving certificate from his brother in Bangladesh, who sent the document to his mobile phone.
The certificate has become crucial evidence to confirm his Bangladeshi origins, the official said. Preliminary investigations revealed that after the attack, Fakir hid in the garden of the Satguru Sharan building, where Khan lives with his family, fearing capture. Fakir reportedly entered the apartment in search of significant cash, but it is unclear if he was aware that Khan resided on the upper floors. He was arrested in Thane three days later.
Upon his arrest, Fakir initially claimed to be Vijay Das from Kolkata but failed to provide any supporting documents. During interrogation, he admitted his true identity and nationality. Police had him contact his brother in Bangladesh, who provided his school-leaving certificate as proof.
Khan, 54, sustained multiple stab wounds and underwent a five-hour surgery at Lilavati Hospital. Doctors reported that he is recovering well. Fakir has been remanded to police custody for five days, and investigators are planning to recreate the crime scene at Khan’s residence. (Source: Digital Desk News India Official)
