Early Saturday, twenty coaches of the Sabarmati Express derailed near Govindpuri station in Kanpur after the engine collided with an “object placed on the track,” according to railway officials. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. The Varanasi-Ahmedabad train derailed between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations at around 2:35 am. Rescue operations are ongoing. Officials stated that the loco pilot reported a boulder hitting the cattle guard, damaging and bending the engine’s front section.

Railway Board officials are investigating the potential involvement of miscreants, suspecting the engine struck a deliberately placed object. “A foreign material was found near the 16th coach. The damage to the cattle guard suggests the engine hit this object and derailed,” an official mentioned. Due to the derailment, seven trains have been cancelled, and three have been diverted.

Shashi Kant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the North Central Railway Zone, confirmed that buses were provided to transport passengers to Kanpur Railway Station. Additionally, an eight-coach MEMU train was dispatched to bring passengers back to Kanpur for further travel arrangements.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed on X that the Sabarmati Express engine derailed near Kanpur at 2:35 am after striking an object. He noted visible impact marks and stated that evidence is being preserved, with the Intelligence Bureau and UP police involved in the investigation. No passengers or staff were injured, and another train was arranged to continue the journey to Ahmedabad.
