External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the UK during a Diwali reception organized by the High Commission of India in London. Speaking to a large diaspora gathering, Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the FTA and expressed hope for finding a mutually beneficial “landing point” in the negotiations.
Jaishankar emphasized the positive force of the bilateral relationship between India and the UK and described it as a focus on the world stage. He noted the complexities of the historical ties between the two nations but underscored the efforts to turn history into a positive force by leveraging commonalities, shared practices, and institutions.
The Enhanced Trade Partnership, colloquially referred to as an FTA, is a key element in realizing the Agenda 2030 for India. Jaishankar stressed that the ongoing negotiations are a focal point for both Indian and British systems, expressing confidence in finding a landing point that works for both countries.
India and the UK have been engaged in negotiations for an FTA since January of the previous year, aiming to significantly enhance their bilateral trading partnership. The talks have witnessed 13 rounds of negotiations, with officials hopeful of reaching a deal before the general elections scheduled for 2024 in both countries.
Jaishankar’s visit to the UK includes various engagements, and he took the opportunity to address the Indian diaspora, one of the largest in the world. He urged the diaspora to spread the story of the new India, highlighting the rapid technological advances and socio-economic development taking place in the country.
The External Affairs Minister expressed gratitude to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for hosting him at 10 Downing Street on Diwali day and acknowledged the commitment and support for the relationship. Despite the upheaval in the UK government on the same day, Jaishankar appreciated the meeting with the newly appointed Foreign Secretary David Cameron, emphasizing the importance of cultivating and supporting the relationship.
Jaishankar concluded by underlining the global significance of a stronger India-UK relationship, noting that it can contribute to contemporary technology, manufacturing, science, innovation, and other relevant ways of modernizing. He also highlighted the role of the diaspora as a motivator for enhancing bilateral ties and realizing the enormous promise of the relationship.
